In the early 2000s, Russell Crowe was indisputably one of the biggest names in Hollywood. He got his start on TV back home in his native Australia, first appearing as Kenny Larkin in a few episodes of the popular soap opera Neighbours. In 1990, he landed his first film roles in Prisoners of the Sun and The Crossing. But it wasn’t until starring as Maximus Decimus Meridius in the film Gladiator that he really made his mark stateside. After his performance in Gladiator earned him an Academy Award for Best Actor, he went on to appear in other critically acclaimed films like A Beautiful Mind and Cinderella Man.

But recently, it seems like Crowe has dropped off the map, and he’s simply not acting as much these days. Here’s why you haven’t seen him on the big screen, and why he probably won’t get back to his former status as one of Hollywood’s most popular actors.

Christian Bale becoming Dick Cheney in Vice threw you for a loop, prepare to be thrown again. Showtime has released the first image of Russell Crowe as Roger Ailes in the upcoming limited series The Loudest Voice—and although the likeness isn’t perfect, the transformation is pretty considerable.

The Loudest Voice’s first episode was written by Gabriel Sherman (who is also a V.F. special correspondent) and Spotlight writer Tom McCarthy. The series is based on Sherman’s book, The Loudest Voice in the Room, and will span eight episodes, with Get Out producer Jason Blum set to executive produce. Showtime has said the series will contextualize events that led to Donald Trump’s rise, as it tracks the former Fox News executive’s ascent to de facto leader of the Republican Party while also providing flashbacks to key moments in Ailes’s life. The series will also, of course, cover the sexual harassment accusations that eventually led to Ailes’s downfall at Fox News.
