This was the best original film released this year that unfortunately many didn’t see. A buddy-cop action comedy featuring perfect chemistry from Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling and one of the funniest scripts of the year. I’m not normally an advocate for sequels, but I would gladly see another film featuring these characters!

6. The Mummy (June 9)
No Brendan Fraser this time. Instead, Universal’s latest relaunch of its classic series is headlined by Tom Cruise. Sofia Boutella (Kingsman: The Secret Service) plays the mummy character this time around, and Russell Crowe debuts as Dr. Henry Jekyll. The film — from director Alex Kurtzman — is intended to serve as the initial installment in a shared Universal Monsters universe, with Dracula, Frankenstein, and others who are expected to appear in future releases.

Funniest chemistry
Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling in “The Nice Guys,” Mila Kunis, Kristen Bell and Kathryn Hahn in “Bad Moms” (particularly in the scene in which Bell imitates a male body part, which really should win her some sort of Oscar), Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele in “Keanu.”

9. “The Nice Guys”

This gritty, shameless 1970s-set buddy comedy about a pair of crime-solvers played by an unlikely comedy team of Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling works beautifully as a throwback gem. Think “48 Hrs.” meets “Lethal Weapon” but wittier and full of polyester, “porn ‘staches” and bad wallpaper, with a funky soundtrack. It’s groovy, man, very groovy.

For a long time, Universal Pictures has been seeking a way to resurrect its monster pantheon. After all, just because they are in the coffin it doesn’t mean they’re really dead. Indeed, long before Marvel Studios made shared universes the new shiny toy in Hollywood, Universal Monsters had invented the concept for franchised movies in the 1940s with the Wolf Man, Frankenstein’s Monster, and even The Mummy getting involved in the strangest adventures. Now, we stand on the precipice of it happening again for 21st century audiences, beginning first and foremost with 2017’s The Mummy.

Updates will begin again on Monday.

The Nice Guys

Shane Black’s buddy comedy was supposed to be the movie that saved studios from their worst instincts: a wholly original idea, with the backing of major stars (Ryan Gosling, Russell Crowe), a decent budget, and no franchise expectations. Instead, this delightfully coarse caper barely earned $36-million at the box office, and will likely be used as an example of what not to do.

That’s a shame, as Black crafted a sharp, immensely entertaining ode to old-school tough-guy shenanigans.

Filmmaker Josh Boone has revealed in a new interview with Creative Screenwriting that Russell Crowe is attached to star in Boone’s upcoming adaptation of Stephen King’s 2014 novel Revival. Boone has written the script for the film and plans to make it his next directorial effort after the X-Men spinoff The New Mutants.

I’m guessing that Crowe will play Charles Jacobs, the charismatic minister whose experiments with electricity lead him down some obsessive and nightmarish paths following the death of his wife and baby in a horrible road accident. The tormented Jacobs is a great role for Crowe, and it will be interesting to see who is cast as Jamie, the local boy who first meets the preacher as a child and runs into him again years later when both are older and much more troubled.
