Spoilers if you haven’t seen GLADIATOR, which, by the way, isn’t too far off from celebrating its twentieth anniversary. How’s that for making you feel old. Back in 2000, Ridley Scott’s historical epic told the story of Maximus (Russell Crowe), a Roman General who found himself reduced to slavery when Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix), the power hungry son of Emperor Marcus Aurelius (Richard Harris), betrayed him and seized control of Rome by murdering his own father. The film was a huge success at the time and even took home a few prestigious awards, including Best Picture and Best Actor at the 73rd Academy Awards.

SOUTH Sydney co-owner and Hollywood star Russell Crowe has given a Gladiator-like thumbs down to critics already dismissing his side’s premiership prospects.

A heavy round one loss to Wests Tigers and a controversial six-month knee injury to superstar fullback Greg Inglis has prompted many to write off Crowe’s Rabbitohs, who face rivals Manly in a crucial game this Saturday night at Brookvale.

There was a famous New Yorker cartoon called The Critic, a stage-eye-view of the audience laughing their butts off at something, and a glowering man sitting front row centre.

It’s a vibe not confined to critics, but to all the participants of awards season – a.k.a. the season for serious movies. And while I applaud that, for a limited time only, we have something to watch besides superheroes, it’s too bad comedies aren’t taken more seriously.

Awards season is upon us, and the Peach State’s film critics have named their favorite movies and performances from 2016.

The Georgia Film Critics Association has handed out awards in categories much like the Oscars since it was founded in 2011 by CAmeron McAllister, marketing director for the Atlanta Film Society. The organization, which includes critics from various publications across the state, including Atlanta Business Chronicle contributor Eleanor Ringel Cater, was a big fan of nostalgic musical “La La Land” and “Moonlight,” which both won multiple awards.

It also gave “The Nice Guys,” which filmed in Georgia and stars Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe, the Oglethorpe Award for Excellence in Georgia Cinema.

“It surprised me when I was tabulating the votes,” McAllister said. “I don’t think ‘The Nice Guys’ will see any Oscar love, but it’s a really good film with a smart screenplay.”
