Ahead of taking to the stage in the Melbourne Theatre Company’s Macbeth, actor Jai Courtney reveals how he earned Russell Crowe’s approval and why Aussies stick together in Hollywood.

When you first met Russell Crowe a few years ago, he told you that you’d been doing some terrible movies. If he saw your résumé now would it be up to his standards?

(Laughs.) He didn’t say terrible, but he did take the piss out of me a little bit. He was poking fun and trying to get a rise out of me to see what I was made of, and working with someone like Russell, you’ve got to be on your toes. That was probably, in a strange way, my first audition with him. If that conversation had gone down really awkwardly, I’m not sure he would’ve wanted to work with me. So we had a laugh and a drink, and before long we were getting ready to do a movie (The Water Diviner) together. That was a dream come true for me.

Who will play Cable in Deadpool 2? That has been a question for months now, with many names thrown in the ring as possible candidates. Plenty of actors have made it known that they’re available for the role, including Dolph Lundgren, Ron Perlman, Russell Crowe and perhaps most famously Stephen Lang. Kyle Chandler was wanted at one point, and is blamed for Tim Miller’s departure as a director, as Ryan Reynolds would not agree to cast the man. Pierce Brosnan has been teased for the role. And last we heard, Stranger Things star David Harbour was at the top of the most wanted list. But what is the Deadpool team really looking for when they finally cast their Cable? Writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick have finally opened up about the casting process. And they’re pretty much looking for the polar opposite of Deadpool. Says Reese.

Spoilers if you haven’t seen GLADIATOR, which, by the way, isn’t too far off from celebrating its twentieth anniversary. How’s that for making you feel old. Back in 2000, Ridley Scott’s historical epic told the story of Maximus (Russell Crowe), a Roman General who found himself reduced to slavery when Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix), the power hungry son of Emperor Marcus Aurelius (Richard Harris), betrayed him and seized control of Rome by murdering his own father. The film was a huge success at the time and even took home a few prestigious awards, including Best Picture and Best Actor at the 73rd Academy Awards.

SOUTH Sydney co-owner and Hollywood star Russell Crowe has given a Gladiator-like thumbs down to critics already dismissing his side’s premiership prospects.

A heavy round one loss to Wests Tigers and a controversial six-month knee injury to superstar fullback Greg Inglis has prompted many to write off Crowe’s Rabbitohs, who face rivals Manly in a crucial game this Saturday night at Brookvale.
